Preface of a Saint (2)

The Collect

God of all creation, who calls us to make disciples of all nations and to proclaim your mercy and love: Grant that we, after the example of your servant Julia Chester Emery, might have vision and courage in proclaiming the Gospel to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our light and our salvation, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Reading

Ecclesiasticus 3:30-4:6

As water extinguishes a blazing fire,
so almsgiving atones for sin.

Those who repay favours give thought to the future;
when they fall they will find support.

My child, do not cheat the poor of their living,
and do not keep needy eyes waiting.

Do not grieve the hungry,
or anger one in need.

Do not add to the troubles of the desperate,
or delay giving to the needy.

Do not reject a suppliant in distress,
or turn your face away from the poor.

Do not avert your eye from the needy,
and give no one reason to curse you;

for if in bitterness of soul some should curse you,
their Creator will hear their prayer.

The Psalm

Psalm 123

Ad te levavi oculos meos

1 To you I lift up my eyes, *
to you enthroned in the heavens.

2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, *
and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,

3 So our eyes look to the Lord our God, *
until he show us his mercy.

4 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy, *
for we have had more than enough of contempt,

5 Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich, *
and of the derision of the proud.

The New Testament

Romans 12:6-13

We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

The Gospel

Mark 10:42-45

Jesus called the disciples and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."
